The research carried out by the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology as a governmental research institution is translational in nature, i.e. it aims at developing concrete products that are either placed at the user's disposal or provided by the Institute itself in the form of science-based services. The most significant of these products are those needed for biological reconnaissance, i.e. fieldable diagnostic methods, new diagnostic agents, and methods of microbial forensics for attribution investigation. The Institute also carries out projects that deal with treatment and prophylaxis as well as surveillance and risk assessment. As regards prospective research, the Institute's range of methods has been expanded, primarily in the field of bio-imaging.
