In the event of an unusual outbreak of disease, it is essential to identify the causative agent as quickly as possible. If the outbreak is suspected to have been caused by the deliberate release of a biothreat agent, it is important right from the beginning of the medical diagnostic procedures to keep in mind that results must not only be conclusive scientifically, but also hold up against legal scrutiny. The diagnostic procedure therefore has to be highly reliable. This has an impact on quality requirements and on diagnostic algorithms, which often go far beyond the methods applied in conventional microbiological diagnostic procedures.
